These showed a newer build of the game that looks significantly better from a visual standpoint. Making this story a little more confusing, just days after the trailer dropped and the resulting fan disapproval, a few new screenshots were released. That direction ended up being so new that it became an entirely different franchise altogether: a tiny little franchise called Assassin’s Creed. Patrice Desilets attempted to take the franchise in an entirely new direction. The 2010 version was actually a game based on a movie, based on a game (I’m not joking). Since then the series has gone through the ringer, including several reboots involving a cel-shaded Prince of Persia in 2008 and Prince of Persia Forgotten Sands in 2010. The success of the newest iteration would lead to a complete trilogy, with all three games receiving high praise. The game was extremely well received, being regarded by many as one of the best games ever made. With the original creator Jordan Mechner working as a designer and creative consultant and Patrice Desilets (of Assassin’s Creed fame) serving as director, the team at Ubisoft Montreal were able to create a highly regarded masterpiece – Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. It wasn’t until Ubisoft took the reigns in 2003 that the franchise really hit the big time. It finally became 3D in 1999 and launched on the Dreamcast console one year later. Originally starting out as a 2D platformer in 1989, the franchise has gone through some large evolutions and changes.
